Get your mind out of the gutter and meet Trashy, a multi-purpose, garbage can/recycling sorter/butcher block on wheels. If you have a small kitchen, or can’t commit to an island, this is a perfect solution. Made of 100% post-industrial recycled formaldehyde-free MDF board from Sierra Pine, each Trashy contains three compartments for a garbage bin; recycling bin; and storage for garbage bags or other trash needs, which can all be removed and washed. Customize Trashy for your eco and kiddie needs….put a blackboard on one side, compost bin, or locking casters to bring Trashy with you to other parts of the house. Better than going to your garage every ten minutes to throw away recyclables…
Hi. This item is great. I happen to be a big fan of Sierra Pine. I have used their MDF in my own house and it stands up. (I used their Medite II and Medex. This product is made of Arreis, which is a less expensive version of Medite II) I was wondering if they used waterbased or solvent based catalyzed lacquer or could you ask for water based if you were customizing it? Just wondering if it offgasses from the lacquer? anna www.green-talk.com
I emailed Trashy’s creators about Anna’s question, and here’s what they have to say -
The usual lacquer for Trashy is unfortunately a solvent base (although it’s low VOC for solvent), on account of durability issues. Off-gassing should be limited to the first 30 days after spraying, after which the product has fully linked and cured, which all happens before shipping.
And yes, if someone requests it, we can do a water base lacquer or paint, although with less colour choices, and with an up-charge (the usual custom colour charge is $125) to cover the time required for the lacquer shop to source the new product, and do a single unit spraying.
Trashy is also available unpainted (less $100) for someone with time on their hands.
Trashy is built from “Arreis” MDF, with white melamine coating both sides - so a self paint job would require coating the exterior only.
