Timberland eco-toteI love when large companies think outside the eco-box - it’s surprising and refreshing. I think the last time I wore Timberland boots were in the early 90s at sleepaway camp, when “Tims” waterproof boots (we had a different name for them, but this is a G-rated blog) were all the rage for the rain and mud. What a pleasant surprise when I found out they’ve launched an eco-line of shoes for men and women, called Earthkeepers, and take a strong stance of corporate responsibility towards the environment and human rights.

Timberland may feature a lot of leather items, but they’re making an effort to balance it out. Last October, when Earthkeepers was launched, an ad campaign with large billboards was featured around Boston and Providence. Now, the billboards have been recycled into reusable tote bags that are waterproof, sturdy, roomy, and all around awesome. I’ve been trying mine out with library books (and with my girls, that’s many, many books), the beach, and gymnastics gear. It’s a great bag, and I’m happy to be able to give away one bag each to five winners this week! These bags are only available at Timberland stores for $25, and they’re limited edition, so you can be sure that you’ll be carrying an eco-bag that most people won’t have.

Rules stay the same - leave a comment here with an answer to this question: what would you put into your Timberland billboard tote? This giveaway will be open until next Thursday, April 24th at midnight PST. Please remember that comments are moderated, so they won’t show up immediately, unless you enter while I’m glued to my computer (which is very likely). Good luck!

Thanks to Erica for all your help!

This contest is now closed!  Thanks to everyone for entering, winners will be announced soon!

My wife & I are diligently working on only going shopping with our own bags. A large sturdy bag like this would be a welcome addition to our growing stash of reusable shopping bags.

RachelJ on 16 April, 2008 at 7:58 pm #

I’d love to add this my stash of cloth bags. I’d use it to carry all the kid stuff that I have to lug around and bring it with me when I’m shopping for more gear.

Amy Locke on 16 April, 2008 at 7:58 pm #

I would use this bag to haul the many things my toddler son requires me to have outside the house. Diapers, wipes, sippy, goldfish crackers, and whatever toy has his fancy that day.

desi on 16 April, 2008 at 8:09 pm #

I will use them to grocery shop, as diaper bags, and a catch all bag for taking to church!

Katie on 16 April, 2008 at 8:15 pm #

Groceries. Lots and lots of groceries.

frugalmom on 16 April, 2008 at 8:22 pm #

I would have to try it on groceries and library trips….oh and the farmers market….

Patti on 16 April, 2008 at 8:23 pm #

I would use them for shopping. Nice big sturdy bags to carry all my junk in!

Jenna on 16 April, 2008 at 8:23 pm #

I haven’t yet made the leap to reusable bags. I’d like to have one to keep in my car for short shopping trips to the convenience store.

Lisa O on 16 April, 2008 at 8:24 pm #

I might try to begin using them for the quick trips to the grocery store…There is no time like the present.

Thanks.

Danielle on 16 April, 2008 at 8:27 pm #

Cindi on 16 April, 2008 at 8:28 pm #

“Wow!” I have always loved “Timberland” gear, but it has been a long time since I have purchased anything from them! How great to know that these totes were made from their “Earthkeepers” billboards! Our family would also use them for library books, school books, workout gear, groceries, on campus and a take a lunch and file folders to work! I also go to a weekend retreat every fall and we bring treats to share. This bag could carry mine! Please enter me in your wonderful drawing. Many thanks,Cindi

Katy on 16 April, 2008 at 8:32 pm #

I would probably carry my bible and sunday school books in it to church every week!!! What a fun tote!!! Thanks for the chance! :)

Sandy on 16 April, 2008 at 8:34 pm #

What an awesome, innovative idea for a totebag! That’s some fantastic thinking right there!
I would use the tote to lug around my daughters clogging shoes and equipment. She needs something rugged and roomy to handle all her stuff yet doesn’t have to worry about getting it all raggedy looking.

Sue on 16 April, 2008 at 8:40 pm #

I would take it to the farmer’s market and stock it up with all kinds of goodies to share with my friends at work.

Reiza on 16 April, 2008 at 8:45 pm #

I’d use them for toting books to and from the library and for keeping miscellaneous toys and things in the car.

Christine Piper on 16 April, 2008 at 8:46 pm #

I don’t have any cloth bags but would LOVE to have some. This would go everywhere with me

Lesha on 16 April, 2008 at 8:56 pm #

Library books and groceries. :)

Tara R on 16 April, 2008 at 8:56 pm #

I think this would make a fabulous library book carrier!

Kyra on 16 April, 2008 at 9:02 pm #

I would LOVE to win one of these! I think I would use it daily. It’s hard to find a REALLY sturdy tote for shopping. I would also use it for library books, going to preschool, the cabin, etc.

Debbie on 16 April, 2008 at 9:09 pm #

I would use my bags for groceries!

CanCan on 16 April, 2008 at 9:18 pm #

I ALWAYS have a lot of stuff to cart around. I’m cloth diapering my baby so that results in a lot of accessories. I also use green bags for grocery shopping. So I would use the bag for cloth diapers, baby stuff, and food.

Bebemiqui on 16 April, 2008 at 9:24 pm #

I’d use it at my local grocery store and would probably take it to the pool. Great giveaway! Count me in. bebemiqui82(at)yahoo(dot)com

LeAnne on 16 April, 2008 at 9:46 pm #

I think it would make a great pool bag for the summer.

Mary @ Adventures in Mommyland on 16 April, 2008 at 9:51 pm #

Looks like it would be a good grocery bag. great giveaway, thanks!

Elaine Heller on 16 April, 2008 at 9:57 pm #

I would love to fill this bag with fresh produce from our local farmers market!

Erika on 16 April, 2008 at 9:58 pm #

I would use it as a diaperbag for my daughter OR keep it in the car for quick trips to the grocery store!

Stephanie V on 16 April, 2008 at 10:19 pm #

my groceries from trader joe’s and whole foods

Alex on 16 April, 2008 at 10:30 pm #

Groceries. I know it is boring, but that’s what I would use it for. I am a little obsessive about library books going in the library bag, etc. Well, maybe we’ll venture out to the beach too and use this…Thanks for the chance.

Gina on 16 April, 2008 at 10:37 pm #

I’d stock mine up with different things on different days. Sometimes Groceries, sometimes goodies for a picnic, use it as a snack/travel bag for trips, I could pack it with a ton of things.

Jean on 16 April, 2008 at 10:53 pm #

With my new baby, I’m trying to create as little waste as possible - cloth diapers, reusable nipple pads, using breast milk bottles rather than disposable breastmilk bags. I’d tote my breast feeding stuff to and from work.

C Duran on 16 April, 2008 at 10:57 pm #

I would either use it for groceries or take my stuff to the beach in it!

Greta on 16 April, 2008 at 11:13 pm #

Perfect to tote all my stuff and “the babe’s” stuff to the pool or beach!

Jessie R. on 16 April, 2008 at 11:47 pm #

I would put a mixture of my purse contents and my daughters diaper bag! Thanks!

The Chatty Housewife on 16 April, 2008 at 11:51 pm #

I would use my timberland tote for library books, knitting, sunday school supplies or my crochet. I could take it with me wherever I go because there are just so many things I could use it for. I would love to win this!

Cheryl Free on 16 April, 2008 at 11:58 pm #

I’d use it for all kinds of shopping ~ including grocery :) *Thanks* for the giveaway!

NicoleZD on 17 April, 2008 at 12:07 am #

I think the question is, what *wouldn’t* I put in an awesome bag like that?

I’d most likely use it for errands — to help carry groceries home, to put library books in, and so on.

Laura Ch. on 17 April, 2008 at 12:30 am #

I just started knitting, so all my knitting supplies would go in the bag for me to tote around! Love it.

Michelle T on 17 April, 2008 at 12:50 am #

groceries from the supermarket or the farmers market

Carol Ezovski on 17 April, 2008 at 1:22 am #

I would put groceries from shopping or books from the library in it.

Kimberly B. on 17 April, 2008 at 2:14 am #

This would be great for shopping, to take to the library, or dance class!

Becca on 17 April, 2008 at 2:22 am #

I’ve never heard of recycled billboards…what a fun idea! I’ve been using reusable bags for grocery trips, but I could definitely use one more.

maria on 17 April, 2008 at 3:51 am #

I my timberland billboard tote I would put a bouquets of flowers for my mother. Together it will be a nice gift for coming mother’s day. I totally agree on you that I really like initiatives like this by big companies. For the flowers I’ve heard about a website with an awesome idea. It’s the website www.floraqueen.com and during May they plant 5 trees for every gift you buy to celebrate mother’s day. This way you make not only your own mother happy, but also Mother Nature.

tupelo on 17 April, 2008 at 4:46 am #

What a great idea! Recycled billboards… who knew. I would use the bag for shopping. We have cloth bags for groceries, but they are not very attractive. It would be nice to have a bag to take around on lesser shopping trips as well. Thank you!

julie on 17 April, 2008 at 5:13 am #

I would use it for shopping at publix…lugging around the kids stuff to play dates…endless

Erin on 17 April, 2008 at 5:45 am #

So many great uses: Toting my 2-year-olds library books to and from the library, a bag for groceries and farmer’s market goodies.

aimee on 17 April, 2008 at 5:57 am #

I would use this bag for all the odds and ends that I want to take with me when I travel around!

Stacy on 17 April, 2008 at 6:21 am #

We have reusable bags for the groceries and shopping but would love a bag like that for going to the pool or the park. So when my little guy gets dirty I can throw the muddy stuff in there and through it in the wash

Marcia on 17 April, 2008 at 7:05 am #

I would use it for grocery shopping as well. I really need to buy a couple of those totes from the store. I hate using so many plastic bags.

Playful Professional on 17 April, 2008 at 7:11 am #

I would put either my beach or gym gear in my bag… or use it for grocery shopping too. This would be great!

Bree on 17 April, 2008 at 7:21 am #

I use these all the time! For the farmer’s market, the library, as a diaper bag, you name it!

Heather on 17 April, 2008 at 7:34 am #

I have reusable grocery bags but they have our store name on it and are ugly so I just use them for groceries, so I’d love a bag like this to take shopping other places like at the mall to put my purchases in.

Laura on 17 April, 2008 at 7:44 am #

This will be a great bag for the farmer’s market, as well as toting books to and from the library!

Mama Zen on 17 April, 2008 at 7:46 am #

All the necessities for outings with my daughter!

Claire on 17 April, 2008 at 8:02 am #

The possibilities are endless! I could use them for groceries, library books, baby gear, beach gear, etc. Thanks!

lace on 17 April, 2008 at 8:08 am #

I would use it for grocery shopping. We have just started using our own bags and only have 4 bags. When we have a big grocery week, we don’t have enough bags and still have to bring home a bit of plastic.

I also like your idea of using it as a library tote. We go to the library every week and don’t bring a bag but the 3 year old always insists on carrying all the books. She usually drops them all.

Ami W on 17 April, 2008 at 8:10 am #

I’m a teacher and I’m always looking for a great bag to carry my students’ work back and forth to my house so I can correct it.

kathleen w. on 17 April, 2008 at 8:14 am #

Jamie Willett on 17 April, 2008 at 8:40 am #

I would use one of these bags for the Farmer’s Market…or flea markets, or even yard sales! I can’t wait for Summer!

Ellie on 17 April, 2008 at 8:55 am #

I’d use it for bringing my sons gear when he goes to play at grandpa house.

Megan Slaboda on 17 April, 2008 at 9:03 am #

I would use it for grocery shopping as well as a purse/diaper bag.

Rebecca on 17 April, 2008 at 9:05 am #

EVERYTHING! i have been using several different reusable bags lately, but they are not as sturdy as these bags! i have 3 kids and so i am constantly running to the store for something and would love his cute bag to cut down on the plastic waste.

Amanda on 17 April, 2008 at 9:20 am #

GROCERIES! I almost always take my own bags for groceries. I have made my own but I don’t have enough. These bags looks wonderful!

Naomi on 17 April, 2008 at 9:40 am #

Well, it’s not a baby carrier, right? Just joking. The baby is probably the only thing I wouldn’t carry in this. I think it would be very useful for toting groceries and library books, although not at the same time…

Rita A on 17 April, 2008 at 9:43 am #

I would use it as much as I could anywhere. From groceries to books and shopping. Maybe even travel. The concept is great. I would love to own a piece of a billboard. Truly unique.

Sarah on 17 April, 2008 at 11:47 am #

I try to leave a tote in my car, so it’s handy when I need it at the library, the grocery store, the mall, the farmers market… so many uses!!!

Anastasia on 17 April, 2008 at 12:01 pm #

Molly B. on 17 April, 2008 at 2:09 pm #

I use these humongous ikea bags when I go grocery shopping now, and they are too large. When my groceries are put in them they are too heavy. These bags look like they’re the perfect size for groceries.

Danyelle on 17 April, 2008 at 5:09 pm #

This is my first time ever on teensygreen or even trying to win something. I would use the tote to replace my carry-all I use now. I usually carry one bag with both mine and my babies things when we go out.

kelli on 17 April, 2008 at 5:15 pm #

I’d like to say I’d put in a book and some knitting for fun, but I’ll probably end up putting a change of clothes and diapers for the kids. Maybe I can sneak in a book, too.

These would be great for taking to the gymn!

Suzanne Bastien on 17 April, 2008 at 11:48 pm #

What would I put in my bag?

Kids clothes, snacks, toys, a book for me, a pen, cards/envelopes and stamps. Random socks my daughter pulls off in the car, random hair clips who meet the same fate as the socks, CDs, a sandal (there is always a random one lying around), bottle of water, a small pack with a diaper for each little one, with a small pack of baby wipes, and a camera to capture every moment I might be afraid of missing.

See why I would need one of the bags? It would get cleaned out once a week, and then I’d start all over again.

Bunny on 18 April, 2008 at 1:08 am #

Cool bag! I love totes. I’d use it for grocery shopping, to the gym and whenever I stay over at my in-laws for the weekend! So many uses! Thanks!

Huguette E. on 18 April, 2008 at 4:21 am #

I haven’t stop using plastic bags yet but want to, this would be a perfect way to start ♥

Andrea on 18 April, 2008 at 7:04 am #

Absolutely for grocerires, to take snacks in for children’s games and activities, extra change of clothes for my potty training toddler, to carry cups for getting glasses of tap water not bottled water, for carrying toys to the beach or Dr. appts. This list could go on and on. Oprah had an awesome show yesterday about challenging families to use only necessities for one week. It showed the families how to use less electricty, use cloth napkins, no paper plates or cups, and learning to carry their own bag lunches and such. It was a great show that you could read up on on Oprah.com, I would imagine!

Shannon on 18 April, 2008 at 7:47 am #

I would use the bag for some of my personal bussiness products.
Thanks

Courtney on 18 April, 2008 at 8:33 am #

Michele McHenry on 18 April, 2008 at 8:48 am #

I guess the question is what I would NOT put in the bag!
Not only do we use these for shopping, but, going to my sons track meets, taking things to my friends and daughter and when Papa goes to give Plasma he carries around the Portable DVD player and books. Looks like it would also fit our little Chihuahua!

Mommy Bee on 18 April, 2008 at 9:03 am #

Trips to the library, beach, grocery store, etc.

Ruth on 18 April, 2008 at 9:14 am #

Would use the bag for various purposes: carrying baby things, groceries, shopping, gym, work lunch.

Amy Leach on 18 April, 2008 at 9:30 am #

I would love to carry this bag to the library (I go several times each week). It would save my poor arms from carrying stacks of books!

Alysha on 18 April, 2008 at 10:31 am #

Since I live on one of the largest campuses in the US, sturdy bags are always welcome! I’d use mine for the normal stuff-carrying books, binders, and school stuff around campus. However, shopping with plastic bags is not only bad for the environment, it’s also really uncomfortable. When I go shopping I usually have to walk a couple of miles, and carrying plastic bags is not much fun when you’re walking such long distances. I would use the Timberland recycled bag to do all of my shopping with. :)

Most of the grocery stores in Seattle are merging towards the BYOB and our family is accumulating quite a collection of reusable bags for library books, groceries, consumable supply stores, clothing stores, etc. This bag will fit in perfectly with our collection and looks durable enough for just about anything.

taryn on 18 April, 2008 at 9:20 pm #

EVERYTHING!! I love tote bags! I use them for grocery shopping all the time, but I also bring a big one to the mall and use it as a purse/shopping bag. I also use them for carrying my laptop/books to class, storing my yarn, and even as a pet carrier for my cat.

Jennifer Barnett on 19 April, 2008 at 11:05 am #

sylvia on 19 April, 2008 at 2:51 pm #

I would use it to haul the $100+ dollars worth of grocery’s when we come back from Trader Joe’s. Also, would come in handy for packing up my 3 year olds goodies as he goes to visit the grandparents.

my trader joe’s and whole foods groceries!

Michelle on 19 April, 2008 at 3:49 pm #

I carry a bag to work of things to do when there’s downtime. I usually have a few magazines, a book and my lunch inside..lately I’ve just been sticking all of it into plastic grocery bags I have saved in my cupboard but the book tends to rip big holes in it. I could also use it for small trips to the store rather than using plastic bags.

Zarah on 19 April, 2008 at 4:14 pm #

Groceries, new clothes, shoes, baby toys….I have banished plastic shopping bags from my life. I would love to add this one to it.

Shilo Beedy on 19 April, 2008 at 4:23 pm #

I would use it for grocery shopping or for a day at the beach.

Amara Ercums on 19 April, 2008 at 4:26 pm #

I would use this tote for grocery shopping, going places and needing to pack an over nighter, basically anything that I can, I am very interested in starting to use cloth bags for the environment. They are more durable and much more useful.

Jeanette Jackson on 19 April, 2008 at 4:53 pm #

lindsey on 19 April, 2008 at 8:15 pm #

I have two jobs and not much time in between them, so I have a lot of stuff to carry in the morning. This would be awesome to carry everything in one place (instead of the 2 bags I use now)

Pam on 19 April, 2008 at 8:20 pm #

This bag would be perfect for my husband to carry all the stuff my kids take with them to their grandparents. They are currently using plastic grocery bags for this and I hate the way things end up lost or even thrown away. He hates to carry tote bags because mine are too girly, but this would be perfect for him.

Debbie on 19 April, 2008 at 8:42 pm #

Jessica on 19 April, 2008 at 10:02 pm #

So they’ve made bags from billboards?! Sounds crazy but pretty darn awesome at the same time. If they’re as sturdy as they sound, I’d use mine to carry the 100+ books I check out at a time from my local library (I’m an elementary teacher and have an “in” with the children’s librarian!)

Cori Westphal on 19 April, 2008 at 10:15 pm #

I’d use this bag everywhere I go! I think it’s important to set a good example to others that it’s not so hard to remember to use a reuseable bag and that one person can make an impact. I would use this bag with pride! Thanks for the great contest!

Aletta C on 22 April, 2008 at 8:48 am #

I could probably carry my full-grown chi in this bag! It looks super-sturdy and quite unique. But more likely, I’d be hauling baby toys, library books, farmer’s market finds, groceries, gym clothes…. I could go on and on.

tk on 22 April, 2008 at 8:52 am #

in an effort to attempt to go green this year, i’ve purchased a few reusable grocery bags - this would be a great addition to that, as well as a nice tote for taking my daughter to the park, etc.
